It's doable.

Not recommended when you have a large scale tourney of more than 30 players involved.

First and foremost, the challenge will be finding neutral ground to solve "conflict" or "trouble" among a group.

If you are not in that group, you can explain the pdga handbook as reference.
If you are IN the group... then you will need to have a backup referee plan.

Challenges in playing and TD'ing at the same time is..

1) flow of traffic - is everyone playing the right holes and playing, not chatting?
2) Does everyone know that the "provisional" rule in order to keep playing and not hold up over silly little things?
3) Are you honest enough to play the game by the rules and not look for shortcuts? Everyone's watching you. Behave.
4) Do you have all your prep work done? Announcements, maps, rules, activities, and etc.. You cant work as well while on the spot trying to score and sort cards then telling people 1 hour after last card then running out to play.

You have the be the last one leaving the "registration" area.. I often switch my cards around with the consent of the players so that I'm starting near the "shelter"  - If i'm not on the 1st card.. I can end up being #2 group on #1 and let the top card go first.

There's more - let's see what other people have to add

I did played at every tournament as a TD. From 4th World Biggest, Florida, and all of 8 Deaf Island.

Sometimes I feel that I need to be back out to being play at some of events based on good numbers of players. But everyone begging me to playing my TD anyway.. Thank to the players. :-) So since all of my host I always have a co-host is my wife Kimberly Keramati. She tend to take care of admission, food, and to hold the money. I did explain the general rules and giving out the information such as speech right before the tournament, also for the wrap up announcements plus giving prizes and cash to the players at the end..

Kim and I always do figure out with cash payout during our lunch break before the 2nd rounds start. So not have to do that at after the end of the final round.

About the problem popped up during the tournament, it happened very few of the times. It tend based on how to counting of throws. I tend to talk and follow up with who have PDGA certified official is Corey Driscoll.

I chose not to be a TD at NM08 Tournament.  I saw from past experince that there would be too much of a problem and chose to go as Tournament Cordinator and have someone else be the Tournament Director, those of you who went to the tournament saw how well it went!

New Mexico was the bomb... but i like to think it was because of the people who went heh...

As a TD for quite a good number of tournaments lately, I play in all of them, however I have not played in the doubles or glow rounds in some of them if they were large, meaning over 30 players. Yes, do what you can to put yourself in a group close by to tournament central. If the tournament is big and you don't have anyone staying around tournament central that knows how to take care of stuff then dont play.
Its a learning experience either way.
